Springing to life

Last Monday night the Humane Society of New York held its Fine Art Photography Auction at the Baryshnikov Arts Center. The auction featured the works of Annie Leibovitz, Bruce Weber, Steven Meisel, Edward Steichen, Sylvia Plachy, Bruce Springsteen and the late Ed Thrasher and Milton H. Green , and many others who donated prints to raise money for the city animals.

Honorary chairs were Cornelia Guest, Tony Bennett, Elliott Erwitt . Chair was Frances Hayward .

Notable prints included a never-before-seen photograph from an unreleased Frank Sinatra album by Ed Thrasher, in addition to the famous print of Marlene Dietrch , voted by Life as one of “The 60 Most Influential Photographs of the Century,” by Milton H. Greene. Photographs were also donated by Roberto Dutesco, Michael Eastman, Arthur Elgort, Fabrizio Ferri, Mary Hilliard, Mary Ellen Mark, Frances McLaughlin Gill, Michael O'Neill, Rowland Scherman, Martha Swope,

Deborah Turbeville and Nitin Vadukul . Madonna donated two autographed prints of herself, and Bruce Springsteen, contributed his shot of Patti Smith . Mikhail Baryshnikov not only donated one of his own photographs but also the space for the event. One hundred percent of the proceeds went to help over 32,000 animals depending on the HSNY veterinary clinic and adoption center each year.
